Black History Month
A year ago today, I was threading and tying the panels of my installation. The piece explores the question, “How did my life get so segregated?”. The answer is that the path of least resistance for white people, is a life of segregation and ignorance about white supremacy. The artwork uses images of college crests, cotton plants, cotton lace, houses and chain link fence to represent the ways I am incentivized to remain in white spaces. On the outer walls, a 9 foot tall map of the red lined neighborhoods of Greater Boston lines the walls. It is made of cotton batting, hand dyed and sewn together. Batting is typically used on the inside of quilts. But this American Story quilt has been deconstructed to reveal the financial tools that keep our racial caste system in place.
